George H Conover Obituary

GEORGE H. CONOVER, SR.

1915-2015

George Conover, 100, of Gulf Breeze went to be with our Lord on Thursday, December 31, 2015, at his home while being attended by his family. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Cora Belle Helf Conover and Joseph Earl Conover, he grew up in Middletown, Ohio, one of five children. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1930, and graduated from Middletown High School in 1933.

George was granted a full scholarship to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he earned his B.A., followed by a scholarship to Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, at Tufts University, where he earned a M.A. in International Law in 1938.

He met his wife, Margaret Carter Conover, in Pensacola in 1944, while serving as a Naval aviator in WWII. At the close of the war, the couple moved to Milton, FL, where they raised four children. George earned a teaching certificate from FSU and taught in the Santa Rosa County School District, primarily at Milton High, for 30 years. Upon his retirement in 1982, he and Margaret moved to a house they built in Gulf Breeze.

Family has always been a very important focus in his life. Much of his travel plans included reuniting with family and friends, as well as visiting museums and famous landmarks. George was active in his church and served many years as a Boy Scout leader.

George was predeceased by his parents, his wife, his two brothers, and granddaughter Margaret Louise Barnard. Left to cherish his memory: two sisters, Evelyn Donohue and Marjean Fielder; son, George Conover, Jr. (Margaret E.), daughters, Linda Cook (Ron), Susan Sponaas (Richard), Margaret Donigan (Charles Williams); eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church of Gulf Breeze, Friday, January 8th at 2pm. Special thanks to the staff of Covenant Hospice, and Pastor Lance Whorton for their assistance to the family.

George was a blessing to his family, his church, and his community. He will be greatly missed.
