Gerald Vernon Thorp, 86, of Pace, Florida, passed away on Friday, June 21, 2019, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida. Gerald was born in Suffolk, England, the eldest child of the late Harry George Vernon Thorp and Maud Louise Ship Thorp Armstrong. He served in the British Army from 1951 to 1953 with the “C” Company, 4th, BN, The Suffolk Regiment (T.A.) before moving to the United States and meeting the love of his life, Ann Marie Pendleton Thorp. He always said meeting her was the best thing that ever happened to him. He was a retired employee of 38 years at Warrington Plumbing INC. Gerald was preceded in death by a sister, Janet Thorp Adams; father, Harry George Vernon Thorp; and mother Maud Louise Ship Thorp Armstrong. Gerald is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ann Marie Pendleton Thorp; a sister, Gillian (Skip) Henley; a son, David (Renee) Thorp; a daughter, Teresa (Johnny) Battle; a grandson, Jeffrey (Sarah) Crane; two granddaughters, Christina (David) McCall and Tiffany (Grant) Godwin; two great-grandsons, Trenton and Jayden Bennett; and two great-granddaughters, Ellie Kate and Ansley Crane. As his wife, Ann, has stated, "Gerald was a one of a kind." With a booming personality and a quick wit, he captivated the attention of any room he was in. His happy place was in his garden, and he was especially proud of his lemon tree. He enjoyed sharing memories of life in England and reciting poetry and song lyrics from the "good old days". He loved his family fiercely and cherished above all knowing that they were happy. Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Friday, June 28, 2019, at Lewis Funeral Home, Milton Chapel. Funeral services for Gerald Thorp will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 29, 2019, at Lewis Funeral Home, Milton Chapel, with Grandson Jeffrey and Granddaughter Tiffany officiating. Burial will follow in the Bagdad Cemetery, with Lewis Funeral Home directing.
