Hans Peter Offenborn

Hans Peter Offenborn, 78, of Navarre Florida, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2015, after a 1 year and 4 month battle with cancer. Hans was born in Petersdorf, on the island of Fehmarn in the Baltic Sea of Germany. He went to school in Germany. For three years he worked as an apprentice and learned the import and export business. In 1957, Hans immigrated to the United States of America. He had a temporary job and went to school at night to improve his English. Hans made friends quickly and one of them introduced him to a manager at Swiss American Corporation, an affiliated company of the Credit Suisse group of Switzerland. He was hired and worked for Swiss American on Wall Street in Manhattan, New York, for 34 years before retiring as a Senior Vice President. While working in Manhattan, Hans resided in Smithtown, Long Island, with his wife and daughter and was an active member of the Smithtown Volunteer Fire Department. He then moved with his family to upstate New York in Rock Tavern, where he enjoyed his weekends as a gentleman farmer on his 42 acre farm, raising a variety of animals from horses, sheep, ducks and geese. Hans also was very involved as a volunteer of the Salisbury Mills Fire Department. For many years, Hans was actively involved with the Fritz Reuter Altenheim in North Bergen, New Jersey, where he served and held positions on the board. In 1992, Hans and his wife, Elaine, retired to Gulf Breeze, Florida, where he enjoyed fishing and walking on the beach. He was very fond of the Gulf of Mexico. Hans was very involved with the Elks Lodge #2787 in Navarre and also The Optimists of North Pensacola. Hans is preceded in death by his wife, Elaine H. Offenborn; his parents, Peter and Dorothea Offenborn of Germany; and two brothers, Willie and Herbert Offenborn, also of Germany. Hans is survived by his daughter, Lisa Wienhoff; son-in-law, Wayne Wienhoff, and his granddaughter, Cherokee Wienhoff, all of Navarre, Florida. He is also survived by his sister, Magda Kohrt, 90, of Fehmarn, Germany; a nephew, Thomas Kohrt, and a niece, Gerda Schulz, both of Germany. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 22, 2015, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (4257 Gulf Breeze Parkway, Gulf Breeze, Florida 32563). Lewis Funeral Home, Navarre, has been entrusted with arrangements.
