Howard Lochrie

Howard Ferguson Lochrie, Jr., 85, of Gulf Breeze, Florida, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 7, 2017. Howard was born on July 16, 1931, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Howard Ferguson Lochrie, Sr. and Harriet Foster. His father worked for an advertising company and his mother was a registered nurse. He attended high school at Hackley School in Tarrytown, New York, and earned a B. A. from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. He joined the Army in 1951 and the Air Force in 1958. He served the military for 20 years until his retirement in 1971. During his time in the military he lived in Panama, Japan, Germany, England, Pakistan, Lebanon, and Vietnam. After his military retirement he was a minister for the Church of Christ in Vermont, Pecos, Texas, and Key West, Florida. Then he retired in the Pensacola area in 1989. He was a member of the Margaret Street Church of Christ in Milton, Florida. Howard was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Helen Charlton; and stepbrother, Jackson Lochrie. He is survived by his son, Michael Lochrie of Hayward, California; Michael’s half-sister, Angela Portela; and his stepbrother, John Blake Lochrie of Acton, Massachusetts. Howard would be best known by his sense of humor, preserverence, and willingness to help others. He volunteered for many programs such as crisis hot line, missing person, child abuse, hospital visitation, and the guardian ad litem programs. He enjoyed keeping up with current news and sports. In particular he liked baseball and track and field. He was on a track team in high school, college, and in the military and was an avid jogger into his 70’s. The family would like to thank Gulf Breeze Courtyard of Gulf Breeze, Florida, where Howard lived during the final two years of his life, for their caring and friendship. Funeral services will be held at noon, Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at Lewis Funeral Home Milton Chapel, with Rev. Preston Wilcox officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m., in Barrancas National Cemetery, aboard Pensacola Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida, with military honors. Lewis Funeral Home, Milton, has been entrusted with arrangements. Visitation will be held 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., prior to the service. In lieu of flowers please make donations to any guide dog for the blind foundation.
