"Jack" Bowen Obituary

Donald Eugene “Jack” Bowen passed away Thursday morning, July 18, 2019, at Sacred Heart Hospital in the emergency room. Donald was born January 5, 1932, in the small community of Sanford, Alabama, in Covington County just outside of Andalusia. He was the youngest of eight children born to Thomas Clifton Bowen and Velma Dickey Bowen. His four brothers were Marzette, Harvey, David “Dick” and Leonard; and his sisters were Glennie Bowen Kennedy, Dot Bowen Russell and Ruth Bowen Wilson. All seven of Donald’s brothers and sisters preceded him in death. Donald’s father passed away the day before Donald’s 16th birthday on January 4, 1948, which necessitated that Donald drop out of Red Level High School and get a job to help support he and his mom. A short time later he joined the U.S. Army and served three years of active duty, and saw duty in the Korean War/Conflict in the early 1950’s. His mom, Velma Dickey Bowen, passed away on May 1, 1967. Upon discharge from the Army he moved to Pensacola, Florida, and got a job and worked as a guard for DuPont on the property of the Chemstrand chemical plant, and earned his GED in the evenings while working full time. Donald was later hired by the Chemstrand company. On April 17, 1954, he was married to Rose Bush from Pleasant Home, Alabama. He and Rose had two children during their marriage, Donna Ree Bowen Lee and David Eugene Bowen. Donald’s two children provided him with four grandchildren, Brian Keith Lee, Meagan Danielle Bowen Stockstill, Brett Clifton Bowen and Rebecca Leigh Bowen Hart. His four grandchildren provided him with eleven great-grandchildren. Donald’s hobbies included fishing and quail hunting. Donald and Rose were separated and subsequently divorced in the mid to late 1970’s. Donald remarried on July 23, 1982, to Bernice J. Bowman and they lived happily together until his passing on July 18, 2019. Donald worked at Chemstrand/Monsanto for decades as a chemical operator, and retired from there in 1987. Donald and Bernice attended Hickory Hammock Baptist Church in Milton, Florida, until their health prevented them from attending on a regular basis. The viewing for the family and friends of Donald Eugene Bowen will be at 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 24, 2019, at Lewis Funeral Home, Pace Chapel (4777 West Spencerfield Road, Pace, Florida 32571.) Graveside Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 24, 2019, with Military Honors, at Barrancas National Cemetery, onboard Pensacola Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. Please meet the family at 12:30 p.m., in the parking lot of Olive Baptist Church Warrington Campus (103 W. Winthrop Avenue, Pensacola, FL 32507.) We will leave the church parking lot promptly at 12:50 p.m., to travel to the base. The children of Donald Eugene Bowen would like to specifically thank Bernice J. Bowman Bowen for taking such good care of their dad for the last few years of his life when his health was failing and he required almost constant care. In lieu of flowers, please make a charitable donation to a worthy cause in the community where you live.
