JoAnn Pitman Obituary

JoAnn Salter Pitman, 85, of Berrydale, passed away Thursday, January 17, 2019. She was born November 7, 1933, in Birmingham, Alabama. JoAnn started her career in teaching at Pace Elementary School and taught there until she married Dewie F. Pitman in 1961. After her marriage, she taught fourth and fifth grade at Munson Elementary School. They had a daughter, Rhoda Lynn, in 1962; and JoAnn began teaching the sixth grade at Fidelis Elementary. Their second child, Jeffrey, was born in 1964. JoAnn held a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish/ Social Studies and a Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education. JoAnn retired from teaching in 1991. She was a member of the Santa Rosa Retired Educators and the Florida Retired Education Association. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Jay. She is preceded in death by her parents, James Ira and Myrle (Owen) Salter, Sr.; a brother, Jim Salter; and her son-in-law, Sam Greene. JoAnn is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dewie F. Pitman; her daughter, Rhoda L. Greene of Peachtree City, Georgia; her son, Jeffrey (Sandra L.) Pitman of Mary Esther, Florida; four grandchildren, LeAnna K. Pitman and her fiancé, Peter Schmalz, of Mary Esther, Aaron J. (Jessica) Pitman of Baker, Sam (Jacquelyn) Greene Jr. of Mobile, and Andrew Greene of Atlanta Georgia; and three great-grandchildren, Tatum JoAnn Pitman, Sophie Greene and Jude Greene. She also leaves to cherish her memory, one sister and three brothers, Martha (Ohlen) Wilson, William O. “Bill” (Helen) Salter, John (Glenda) Salter, and Ed (Marie) Salter; sister-in-law, Lou Salter; and a host of friends and family, and many others who consider her “Grandmama.” Visitation will be held 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Sunday, January 20, 2019, at Lewis Funeral Home, Milton Chapel. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 21, 2019, at First Baptist Church of Jay.
