LJ Smith Obituary

L J Smith, 80, of Milton, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2015. Mr. Smith was born in Sand Hill, Alabama, to Lonnie Leeroy Smith and Nancy Mary Smith. He was raised in the Brewton, Alabama, and Jay, Florida, areas. He served six years in the US Air Force, beginning in 1954, including overseas duty in Okinawa, Japan. He finished his military service in Portland, Oregon, where he met Ila, his wife of 25 years. They had two children, Lee and Lisa. Mr. Smith worked as a machinist in the aircraft industry. He and his family returned home to Florida in 1984, settling in Milton, where he lived the rest of his life. He attended Christ Wesleyan Church in Warrington until 1989. He is preceded in death by his parents and eight of his 11 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his two children; Lee (Suzanne) Smith of Marianna, Florida, and Lisa (Richard) Simmons of Hanford, California; four grandchildren, Draigen Simmons, Taylor Smith, Natalie Smith and Charlie Smith; three brothers, Johnny Smith and Elbert Smith of Houston, Texas, and Houston Smith of Milton, Florida. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, May 11, 2015 at Lewis Funeral Home, Milton. Funeral services for LJ Smith will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at Lewis Funeral Home, Milton Chapel, with Pastor Joe Prestridge officiating. Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m., in Barrancas National Cemetery, onboard NAS Pensacola. Pallbearers will be Cameron Craker and David Polk. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Hospice in memory of L.J. Smith.
