Margaret Ward-Bertram Obituary

Margaret Louise (Simmons) Ward-Bertram peacefully passed away July 28, 2014 at the Cedar Ridge Inn Nursing Home in Farmington, New Mexico where she had relocated from Milton, Florida to be near her daughter, Jill. Margaret was born on July 3rd, 1920 in Jay, Florida to Walker Austin Simmons and Hazel (McArthur) Simmons whose later residence was Milton, Florida. Margaret is survived by her daughter, Jill Ward of Farmington, New Mexico; her son, Jim Ward and his wife, Marlene, of Cumming, Georgia and Overbrook, Oklahoma; her grandsons, Scott Ward of Atlanta, Georgia; Paul Bradberry of San Francisco, California, Chad Ward of Pensacola, Florida; and her great granddaughter, Emmy Marshall of Milton, Florida. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband and father of her four children, Duane Ward; her second husband, Maurice Bertram; her son, Mike Ward; her daughter, Susan Bradberry; her granddaughter, Jennifer Bradberry; and her parents, Walker and Hazel Simmons. Margaret was raised and attended school in Milton, Florida. She attended the Florida State College for Women which later became co-educational and was renamed Florida State University. While attending college, Margaret met her future husband, who was based at NAS Pensacola in flight training, and who, after completing military service, became a pilot for United Airlines. As a pilot's wife, Margaret lived throughout the United States, including Long Island, New York, Chicago, Illinois, Los Angeles, California, San Francisco, California and Denver, Colorado. After her husband's death in a commercial airplane crash, Margaret relocated the family to Milton, Florida and built on acreage her husband had purchased for retirement. Margaret traveled extensively throughout her life, including cruises, trips with family to Europe, Hawaii, the Caribbean and throughout the USA. Margaret was particularly fond of the Western USA and in particular, Colorado, where she and her husband had raised their four young children on a ranch and in a small country town, Castle Rock, south of Denver and where she returned many times to visit. Margaret was a voracious reader and music lover, whose home could have served as an extension library. She had many interests, but particularly enjoyed coaching her children in swimming and diving competition, and even acting as a diving judge when requested. Margaret also had a passion for horses and her home and acreage on Hamilton Bridge Road in Milton, Florida provided a large and beautiful place for many trail rides. Margaret was very popular with her children's friends; providing food, advice, and even getting the friends out of trouble when necessary. She will be remembered and missed by many. Later in Margaret's life, she provided assistance and comfort to patients and their families at Santa Rosa Hospital in Milton, Florida. It was here, she met her future second husband, Maurice Bertram. Margaret was cremated at Ertel Funeral Home in Cortez, Colorado. Services have been held in Colorado and Oklahoma. A grave-side memorial service will be held in Milton, Florida at the Milton Cemetery, Berryhill Road and Stewart Street at a later date to be announced. Lewis Funeral Home, Milton, Florida will be in charge of arrangements.
