Marion Cumbie Obituary

Marion Cumbie went home to her precious Lord and Savior early Friday morning, March 18, 2016. She has been surrounded by her loving family, and she passed with a smile on her sweet face. Marion was born May 07, 1926, on Okaloosa Street in Milton, Florida, to parents Lewis Tillman Pendleton and Marzell Carroll Pendleton. She had three brothers; Glen, Ben and Cecil. She also had three sisters, Mary E., Alma L., and Wanda (all deceased.) She was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Cumbie; a son, Johnny Cumbie; grandson, Tommy Thurman; and nephew Tommie Cumbie. She was a member of the Milton First Assembly of God Church. She received salvation in 1950 and never missed a day reading the Bible in the last 42 years. She read the Bible through over 200 times. She loved God’s Word and quoted it often. We will miss her wisdom and knowledge and those daily phone calls. She lived a very full and blessed life, “that was challenging”, to sum it up in just a few words. In 1938 she worked her first job as a delivery girl for her Great Aunt Mary Blocker; where she received the most votes from customers, and won a bicycle to make her job of delivering much easier. She was excited about that! She recounted many stories of logging with her Dad and family, and floating logs on the river and the smell of the Bagdad Mill and Lumber Co., Hoover Days, their first battery operated radio where they would listen to the Grand Ole Opry with Minnie Pearl and Roy Acuff, and many hilarious stories of her and her siblings! She could play the piano and any song she could remember the tune! Her passion of fishing was a family one that she received as a child and one that she passed along to her family. Her family depended on fishing for their living as well. She fished every day but Sunday up until her health declined recently. She was very good at catching many many fish in her lifetime! As she recounted her life of fishing she said water and fishing has been “predominant” in her life. On April 22, 1943, she and James David “J.D.” Cumbie went to Brewton, Alabama, and were married. They lived and loved together for nearly 58 years until his passing April 19, 2001. To this marriage they were blessed with six children: Brenda (aka #1) Kathryn Hatcher (Cecil), Linda (aka #2), Faye Thurman (Tommy), Judy (aka #3) Shiver (Eustice), Johnny (deceased), Rita (aka #4) Patterson (Paul), and Norma (aka #5) Martinez (Julian). Marion had thirteen grandchildren, thirty great grandchildren; and eighteen great-great-grandchildren; her Special Furry Companion “Buddy”, a special neighbor and friend, Sharon Etheridge; and numerous other relatives and friends. She loved the City of Milton and knew so much history. Her letters to the editor will be sorely missed. She was proud of her husband’s service to the city of Milton for his service as Chief of the Fire Department for many years. She often said “I’m a blessed ole lady!” She was indeed. Funeral Services for Mrs. Cumbie will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, March 21, 2016, at the Lewis Funeral Home Chapel in Milton, with Rev. Fred Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in the Cumbie Memorial Park, with Lewis Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., on Monday, March 21, 2016, prior to services, at the Lewis Funeral Home Chapel in Milton.
