Peggy Godwin Milton, Florida Obituary

Peggy Godwin

Peggy Dean Godwin, 80, of Jay passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 25, 2019, at Pruitt Healthcare, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Peggy was born to Eugene and Inez (Bohannon) Dean on December 8, 1938, in Jay, Florida, where she resided most of her life. She was a member of Pine Level Baptist Church where she was the pianist on and off over a span of 60 years. Peggy graduated from Jay High School and then went to work in her aunt’s cafe decorating cakes and waiting tables. She went on to work as a waitress over the next 35 years and retired at the age of 62 from Brewton Motor Inn. Peggy’s main passion in life was growing flowers of every color. She had such a green thumb that a bare yard would soon become a masterpiece of floral wonder once she got hold of it. Peggy dearly loved Southern Gospel Music and enjoyed singing and playing the piano at church. Her rendition of “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” will long be remembered by our community. She adored little children and they loved her right back. Every Sunday morning they would gather around the piano for their Miss Peggy hug and she loved every minute of it. Peggy cherished her Lord, her family, her church and her friends. She loved everybody. She is preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Inez Dean; brother, Donald Gene Dean; sister, Sue Dean Baker; and her son, Michael Eugene Holland. Peggy is survived by her daughter, Wanda (David) McCarthy; five grandchildren, Shondra (Jamey) Hattaway, Leslie Gonzalez, Shaena (Ken)Reeves, Dusty McCarthy and Noah (Taylor) McCarthy; eight great-grandchildren, Christian, Austin, Kendall, Jayden, Michael, Logan, Anna and Kole; one sister, June (Joe) Gillman; special sister-in-law, Evelyn Dean; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. for family; and from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. for everyone, Tuesday, April 30, 2019, at Pine Level Baptist Church. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 1, 2019, at Pine Level Baptist Church, with Reverend Earle Greene, Reverend Brian Oakes, Reverend Joseph Gillman and Brother Wally McCoy officiating. A Graveside Service will follow in the church cemetery with Lewis Funeral Home of Milton directing. Pall Bearers will be Dusty McCarthy, Noah McCarthy, Ken Reeves, Jamey Hattaway, Jayden Fink, Don Dean, Brad Baker, Seth Goforth, Daniel Goforth and A.J Holland. Special thanks to Dr. David Smith, Twyla Cotton and their staff; Dr. Bach-Uyen LeThi; the Nurses, CNAs and Therapy staff of Pruitt Healthcare; and her special home caregivers, Dusty McCarthy, Taylor McCarthy, Evelyn Dean and Beverly Blair.
