Sammy Vickers

Sammy Lee (Sam) Vickers, a retired Commander in the United States Navy and a retired Pace High School Navy JROTC instructor, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2018, age 71, at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Florida. Sam was born on November 3, 1946 in Corpus Christi, TX to Mary Etta and Leslie Brooks Vickers. He attended schools in Lubbock and Odessa, Texas, where he graduated from Permian High School. As a child Sam was gregarious, funny, and made friends easily. Sam attended University of North Texas in Denton where he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, and where he met the love of his life, Sally Linda Lee. Sam served honorably for 22 years in the United States Navy. As a P-3C Orion pilot, he patrolled the waters of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans hunting Russian submarines during the Cold War. Sam was assigned to VP-6 in Hawaii and VP-5 in Jacksonville, Florida. His also served aboard USS Eisenhower, CVN 69, and as the Executive Officer at Whiting Field, Florida, where he retired. Sam’s passion for serving his community continued after his Naval retirement. In 1995, Sam served as the Executive Director of the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce. Following his tenure with the Chamber, Sam continued his service by leading the Pace High School Navy JROTC unit. He served as unit commander for 18 years. During his tenure he led the Pace High school to top national honors in 2003. Concurrently, he worked with several other community organizations, always giving selflessly of his time. Sam is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Sally Vickers, daughter Jessica Jamroz, brother William Vickers and sister Nancy Vickers Peterson. He also had 3 nieces, Miranda, Lindsay, Ashley and several great nieces and nephews. Visitation services will be held on Wednesday, April 4 from 4:30PM – 7:00PM at Lewis Funeral Home, 4777 West Spencer Field Road, in Pace. The Funeral will be Thursday April 5, at 11:00AM at Lewis Funder Home in Pace. A private burial ceremony will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery on Naval Air Station Pensacola. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Santa Rosa Navy League or Pace High School Navy JROTC.
