Violet Clodfelter Obituary

Violet Marie Clodfelter, 88, of Westminster Oaks Retirement Home, Tallahassee, FL, died Monday afternoon, November 17, 2014. She was born in 1926 in the Gallops fish house of Milton, Florida and grew up in Pace. In 1947 she married Paul Edward Clodfelter, a sailor from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Violet and Paul followed naval and post-naval career assignments (Whiting Field, Milton, FL; Trinidad of the British West Indies; Patuxent River, MD; Whiting again; Cecil Field NAS, Jacksonville, FL; Whiting again; Millington NAS, Memphis, TN; Cecil Field again; Boca Chica NAS, Key West, FL; McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corp., St. Louis, MO; Seymour Johnson AFB, Goldsboro, NC; and Taegu AFB, Republic of South Korea) before settling back in Pace in 1972. Paul died in 1988 and Violet remained at their Pea Ridge residence until her move to Westminster Oaks in 2001. She was first and foremost a mother and homemaker and loved her time with family and friends. She especially enjoyed being with her sisters (Gladys Gallops Giddens, Cleo Gallops Emmons, Ruby Gallops Knight, Eleanor Gallops Grant and Carolyn Gallops Holton) and loved her brothers, Glenn Gallops and Cecil Gallops. All except Carolyn predeceased her passing. Violet loved adventure as evidenced by her hang glider flight in Hawaii, hot air balloon chase in north Florida, and sky dive excursion from 6,000 feet (at the age of 70) in upstate South Carolina. She volunteered as a Cub Scout den mother, Latch Key tutor, PTA organizer, and was a Tupperware representative. She also enjoyed travel, singing - especially gospel music (her first efforts a public singing were at Pace Assembly Of God church as a youth), bowling, working crossword puzzles, shopping and, of course, her children and grandchildren. She attended many youth ball games played by her sons, and was an avid collector of porcelain dolls and owl figurines. Through all she remained an active and dedicated member of Beta Sigma Phi, joining chapters at all the locations where she resided in the family travels. Her last chapter was Laureate Gamma Sigma of Pensacola. Survivors include her three sons and their wives (Gregory Keith and Nancy Clodfelter of Clemson, SC; Jeffrey Alan and Vickie Clodfelter of Slidell, LA; and Scott Edward and Kathy Clodfelter of Tallahassee, FL); six grandchildren (Shelly Marie Phillips, Rachel Elizabeth Campbell, Michelle Green, Jonathan Clodfelter, Christopher Clodfelter, and Katie Mynard); seven great grandchildren (Carter Campbell, Savannah Campbell, Claire Clodfelter, Alyson Clodfelter, Jordan Green, Zachary Green, and Gregory Carroll); and her sister Carolyn of Jacksonville. Violet was pre-deceased by her father, Isom Lee Gallops, and her mother, Maebelle Barnes Gallops Plant of Pea Ridge. She was also predeceased by a granddaughter, Caitlin Clodfelter. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, November 23, 2014, at Lewis Funeral Home Pace Chapel, with Reverend Glyn Lowery, Jr. officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday with Paul in Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola with Reverend Mike Poston presiding. Friends may call on the family at Lewis Funeral Home Pace Chapel before and after the service on Sunday.
