William Jones Obituary

William (Bill) Clayton Jones, 92, of Milton, Florida, passed away Monday, August 1, 2016. Bill was born in Holt, Florida to the late Charlie and Kate Herndon Jones. Mr. Jones was a Navy veteran, serving as a Steamfitter at various locations from 1944 to 1946, including Lambert Field in St. Louis. It was in St. Louis where Bill met his wife, Esther Lily Mary Jones. They were married on March 10, 1946. After he was honorably discharged from the Navy, they returned to Milton and he began a 30 year career as a Civil Service employee in the Whiting Naval Air Station Public Works Department. Mr. Jones was very active in the community over the years. He and his wife worshipped at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Milton, where they were charter members. He served for 19 years on the Santa Rosa County Civil Service Board and served as the Board’s chairman in 2008. He was a member of several organizations, including Scottish Rite and the Hadji Shriner’s Temple, where he was a Charter member and served on the Director’s Staff. He was a Masonic member of Santa Rosa Lodge #16 F&AM for 65 years, where he served as worshipful master in 1971. He also volunteered for the Milton Fire Department and the Santa Rosa County Sherriff’s Posse. Mr. Jones was a lifelong Florida Gator fan, an avid hunter and fisherman and always enjoyed being outdoors with his hunting dogs. He enjoyed cooking and made the best homemade biscuits in town. Mr. Jones was preceded in death by Esther, his loving wife of 69 years, his parents, Charlie and Kate Herndon Jones; sisters Effie Williams, Bessie Beall, Edna Parish and brothers, Andrew Jones, Doc Jones, and George Jones. Mr. Jones is survived by daughter, Sharon Jones of Milton; daughter Karen (Michael) Grimes of Fayetteville, Georgia; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Liam) Brucker of Denver, Colorado, Rebecca Grimes of Washington DC, Suzanne (Ian) Murray of Grove City, Ohio and Katherine Lochausen of Herndon, Virginia; two great-grandchildren; Bryson and Annabelle Murray of Grove City, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 4, 2016, at Lewis Funeral Home, Milton. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 5, 2016, at Lewis Funeral Home, Milton Chapel, with Pastor Bob Hornick officiating. Interment will follow at Serenity Gardens Cemetery, Milton. Active Pallbearers will be Mike Herndon, Corey Jones, Marty Jones, Ian Murray, Austin Plowman, Taylor Plowman, Tim Spayd, Ozzie Williams, Peter Joe Williams, Spencer Williams, Steve Williams. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jack Allen, Jeter Brock, William Carroll, Donald Hobbs, Charles Jones, Pete Pierce, Jim Spencer, Ron Taylor, Larry Welch, Obie Willis, David Wolfe. The family would like to thank the staff at Forsyth House for the love and care given.
