William Douglas Whitley, Sr. 1941-2013 William D. Whitley, Sr. born on June 1, 1941 to Carson and Rilla Whitley in Jay, Florida passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 after a brief illness. Doug is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Joyce; one sister, Doris Pope; one brother, Toney (Sandra) Whitley; three children, Doug Jr., Rob (Yvette) and Beth (Jim) Kyburz; four grandchildren, Brandy (Joe) McCauley, Chris Bass, Carson Whitley, and Shanda Evans. Three great-grandchildren, Cole and Conner McCauley, and Kellan Evans; one aunt, Bobbie Whitley; and one nephew and niece, Shane and Victoria Donaldson. Doug spent most of his childhood in Chumuckla, Florida. After graduating from high school in 1959, he married Joyce Turner, his high school sweetheart. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served for four years. He then began working at Bell South in Pensacola in 1964. Feeling a need to get closer to his family and return to his country roots, he transferred to Milton and bought a home in Pace. He retired in 1995 after 31 years of employment. He was an avid fisherman and loved the outdoors. He was an active Shriner for many years helping families with medical problems. He never met a stranger, always seizing the opportunity to make a new friend. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He will be missed greatly by all of his family and friends. His memory and wisdom will not be forgotten. We love you. Visitation will be this Friday, October 25, at 12:00 p.m. followed by services at 1:00 p.m. at the Lewis Funeral Home, Pace Chapel. Burial will take place at Elizabeth Chapel Community Cemetery in Chumuckla, Florida following the service. Lewis Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements.
