Carlton Maggs

Carlton Albert Maggs, 78, of Pace, Florida, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at PruittHealth in Milton, Florida, after a brief illness. He was born July 25, 1940, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, the son of the late Charles Albert Maggs and Laura (Gertrude) Crocker Maggs. Carlton was a graduate of Fitchburg High School, class of 1958. He played football at Fitchburg High School; and played saxophone in the marching and dance bands. He received a diploma from The Stockbridge School of Agriculture at University of Massachusetts in Animal Science, and was a member of Alpha Tau Gamma fraternity. Carlton spent many of his earlier years working on the Leavenworth Farm in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. He later worked as firefighter for the town of Westminster, Massachusetts, from 1962-1998. During his time with the fire department he played an active role in school presentations during Fire Prevention Week. He was an instructor at Meadowood Fire School, in Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire, from 1970-1990. Carlton also worked as an agent for John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance company from 1964-1974; and later for Prudential Insurance. He was a bus driver for Wilson Bus tours of Templeton, Massachusetts, from 1985-2003. Carlton loved farming, history and traveling across the US and Canada. He was involved in many community events and activities in the Westminster and surrounding area including the Neighbors Helping Neighbors- Westminster Town Benefit, Oakmont High School Band Parents’ Association and Westminster Community Band. He is predeceased by his wife, Patricia Swift Maggs. Carlton is survived by his son, Charles Curtis Maggs of Gardner, Massachusetts; one daughter, Christine Alana Bone, and her husband, James Randolph, of Pace, Florida; two grandchildren, Daniel Paul Bone and Laura Elizabeth Bone; two brothers, Clifton Maggs and Bruce Maggs; and several nephews and nieces. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 16, 2019, at Immanuel Baptist Church (4187 Hwy 90, Pace, Florida 32571) with Bro. Clain Roberts officiating. Visitation will be held, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., prior to the services. Burial will be held at a later date in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Westminster, Massachusetts. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made, in Carlton’s name, to Westminster Benefit Fund Inc, PO Box 63, Westminster, MA 01473 Lewis Funeral Home, Milton, Florida, has been entrusted with arrangements.
