J.T. Parnell, 92, of Satsuma, passed from this life on Friday, March 31, 2017 at Community Hospice Bailey Center for Caring in St. Augustine following a long illness. Born in Leakesville, Mississippi to John and Bessy Parnell, he moved to Putnam County in 1963 from Mobile, Alabama. J.T. worked as a welder at Georgia Pacific where he retired after 30 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Federal Point, a mason and served as Past Master of Hastings Lodge # 183. Having grown up during the depression years, J.T. had a strong work ethic that he applied throughout his life. He learned how to fly planes at age 16 and later worked as a welder at the naval ship-yards in Mobile Bay. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and as well as traveling all over the United States. More than anything else in life, J.T. loved his family and tried to instill in each of his kids the same hard work ethic he had learned. He spent many hours rebuilding cars for his kids and teaching them how to work on the engines and perform their own repair work. In addition to his parents, J.T. was preceded in death by his siblings, Hazel Parnell, Curtis Parnell and Ellene Parnell. He is survived by his children, James Terrell Parnell (Jackie) of Palatka, Joan Brunson (Wayne) of Jacksonville, Wanda Rena Pate (Jim) of Palatka, Charles R. Winslow (Jennifer) of Palatka, Tina Duck (Chuck) of Palatka and Toni Peak (Conley) of Bunnell, a sister, Helen Wilson of Palatka, 17 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2017 beginning at 2:00 P.M. at his daughter, Tina’s home at 109 Macon Road in Palatka. For additional information please call (904) 540-8839.
