Charles Ricketson

Charles Robert Ricketson, 95, World War II veteran, passed away on October 31, 2011 in Rome, Georgia. Mr. Ricketson was born on February 1, 1916 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to Charles Roscoe Ricketson and Lurlie Lee Loudermilk. He grew up in Cornelia, GA and graduated from Cornelia High School. He attended Emory University and University of Georgia. During his time at UGA he belonged to Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. He then worked for Le Tourneau. Later he graduated from Officer Training School of the Army Air Corps as a pilot, First Lt. He flew the China Burma route known as Aluminum Alley during World War II. After the war he flew for United Airlines, worked at Chicopee Manufacturing and then retired from Lockheed Martin as a Time Standards Engineer after 34 years. During his time at Lockheed, he worked on the initial team for the C130. He was a very humble and kind gentleman who enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling and photography. He and his wife Sara were avid Georgia Bulldog fans and attended home and away games until health would not allow it. Most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends at his vacation home for 42 years on Lake Burton. The past 8 years he enjoyed his home on Lake Blue Ridge. Mr. Ricketson was a charter member of Powers Ferry United Methodist Church in Marietta, Georgia. He was also a member of the Sons of Confederacy and Sons of the American Revolution. Mr. Ricketson was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bill, his sisters' Francis and Evelyn , and his wife Sara Maude Summerford Ricketson. He is survived by his three daughters Robin Bolton (Robert) of Alpharetta, GA, Sallee Smith (Larry) of Rome, GA and Hope Cook (Jim) of Hernando Mississippi; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Services will be Friday November 4, 2011 at Level Grove Baptist Church in Cornelia, GA at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Atlanta Humane Society, Mansell Campus, 1565 Mansell Rd, Alpharetta, GA 30009. McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home of Cornelia (706/778-8668) is in charge of local arrangements along with Daniels Funeral Home of Rome, GA.
