Herschel Davis

Herschel “Doc” Davis, 98 years, 10 months and 12 days, of Mt. Airy, passed away Monday, November 28, 2011, at his residence. Born in Stephens County on January 16, 1913, he was the son of the late Wimpy Samuel and Ellie Marie Hicks Davis. Mr. Davis was a teacher and basketball coach for over thirty-three combined years at McEachern High School in Marietta, South Habersham High School and Habersham Central High School. He was a member and former Sunday school teacher of Hazel Creek Baptist Church. He enjoyed gardening, time with family and reading the Bible. He served with the U. S. Army during World War II from December 1942 – February 1946. In addition to his parents, Mr. Davis was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Powers; a son, Larry Loggins; brothers, Clyde and Edwin Davis and Lee Roy Cash; sister, Ruby Fricks and a granddaughter, Marsha Bowden. Survivors include his loving wife, Hazel Powers Davis of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Joann Loggins of Mt. Airy; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Jack Powers, and Tara and Brent Reems of Mt. Airy; daughter, Kathy Ravan, of Mt. Airy; daughter-in-law, Kathy Loggins of Mt. Airy; 5 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Annette Davis Blackburn of Alto and Carol Davis Randall of Zebulon. Funeral services are 11:00 am Thursday, December 1, 2011, at Hazel Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Trent Smith, Rev. Wayne Fowler, Rev. Chris York officiating. Interment will follow in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. O. L. McCullough officiating and full military honors provided by the Grant-Reeves VFW Post #7720, Rabun County DAV Chapter #15 and the American Legion Post #84. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday and from 2 to 4 pm and from 6 to 8 pm on Wednesday.
