Jean Towers CORNELIA, Georgia Obituary

Jean Towers

Jean Alberta Towers, age 96, died peacefully on March 14, 2012 surrounded by family and loving nurses. She was born in Portland, Oregon in 1915 and later the family settled in Los Angeles, California where she grew up. Jean earned a B.A. degree from the University of Southern California in 1938, and married her college sweetheart, Charles Loren Towers who pre-deceased her in 2000. With their two daughters Donna and Mary, they moved around the country with Mr. Towers’ career with Shell Oil Company, and eventually settled in Atlanta in 1961. Jean contributed a great deal of time to supporting the Atlanta Symphony during the years when Robert Shaw was called to Atlanta. She and Charlie were also deeply involved in the life of First Presbyterian Church. When time came to retire, they spent a great deal of time in Cashiers, N.C. traveling overseas and enjoying family. Jean was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. A talented artist, decorator, and seamstress, she designed and constructed original clothes which was one of her passions. We could show her a picture of something we’d like to wear and she would develop a pattern and then sew the piece according to our wishes. She also loved plants and flowers and had an amazing green thumb – she could root an African violet from one leaf! Jean is survived by her daughters, Donna Towers Tabaka and Mary Towers Weese and their children and spouses: Mike and Tammy Friedman Stanton, Geoff and Hope Spence Friedman, Lauren Hester and Christopher and Cristin Ralston. She’s also survived by her great grandchildren: Anna Hester, Braden Ralston, David Ralston, Ellie Friedman and Spence Friedman. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta in memory of long-time members Jean and Charles Towers.
