McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home announces the death of Weyman O. Griffin, age 80 of Hiawassee and Baldwin, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2011, following an extended illness. Born in Homer, GA on January 15, 1931, he was the son of the late Buray B. and Fannie Mae Brewer Griffin. Mr. Griffin lived most of his life in Habersham and Banks County. He was a 1956 Honor graduate from John A. Gupton College of Funeral Service in Nashville TN in 1956. Weyman and his wife Claudette faithfully served the community from 1957-1992, he also served as the Banks County Coroner. Master Sergeant Griffin faithfully served his country during the Korean War, where he received the Purple Heart for injuries received in battle. He was a member of Union Hill United Methodist Church, Cornelia Masonic Lodge # 92, Scottish Rite Valley of Atlanta and Yaarab Shrine Temple. Weyman dearly loved his wife of 55 years Claudette and his family and friends, with whom he loved to fish. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas B. Griffin who also was a funeral director, having owned Daniels Funeral Home in Rome, GA. Survivors include his wife, Claudette B. Griffin of Hiawassee and Baldwin; son & daughter-in-law, Weyman Matthew and Tammy R. Griffin of Hiawassee; daughter and son-in-law, Weyna Dee and Michael Sands of Homer; grandchildren, Jason, Nicholas, Mitchell, Marie, Michael, Joseph, Brittany, Andrew; great grandchildren, Chase, Zack, Grant and Autumn. Funeral service will be 11:00 am Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin and Stewart with Dr. Charles Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in the VFW Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by the Habersham County American Legion Post #84, Grant Reeves VFW Post #7720 and the Rabun County DAV Chapter #15. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 & 6-8 pm on Monday. An online guest register is available and may be viewed at www.mcgaheegriffinandstewart.com.
