Carroll Whitaker Obituary

Carroll H. Whitaker, 80, of Dawsonville died Thursday April 22, 2010 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a period of declining health. Born November 11, 1929 in Winston Salem, NC to the late William Everett and Frankie Jane Whitaker, he had lived in Dawson County for the past 20 years having moved from Merritt Island, Florida. Mr. Whitaker was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. While in the armed service he learned electronics and communications. After his discharge he began a career with General Dynamics doing electrical contract work for N.A.S.A. He worked on many N.A.S.A. projects including their satellite program, the Apollo program, the Space Shuttle program and retired after over 30 years of service. A man of many talents, he especially enjoyed shrimping and his dogs. Mr. Whitaker was also preceded in death by a son, Anthony “Tony” DeLong, sisters, Gwen “Sis” Maddry, Judy Ralston; and a brother, William Whitaker. Surviving are his wife, Carol Whitaker, Dawsonville; children, Greg and Sandy DeLong, Deland, FL, Debbie and Jeff Brown, Warren, Ohio, Sandra and Richard Kritikos, Dawsonville, Karen DeLong, Dawsonville; sisters, Joyce Smith, Murfreesboro, NC, Frances Chaplin, Durham, NC; eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday April 25, 2010 at 2 o’clock at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Tim Biddy will officiate. Interment will follow in Sawnee View Gardens.
