Judy Melton Obituary

Judy Pierotti Melton, 69, of Hart County, was granted a quiet and gentle death on July 7, 2015, in Anmed Health Medical Center in Anderson, S.C., after hospitalization for sudden cardiac arrest. May she rest in peace; may she rise in glory; may the Lord comfort those who grieve. Ms. Melton was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and graduated from St. Pius X Catholic High School there. Her further education was at Georgia State University (B.A.), Tulane Law School (J.D.) and A.B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane (M.B.A). Most of Ms. Melton’s working career was in university settings. She was an administrative assistant at Emory University medical school. At Tulane Law School, in New Orleans, she rose to Assistant Dean for Continuing Legal Education. Ms. Melton was the first Executive Director of the Northeast Georgia Counsel on Domestic Violence, getting the battered women’s program organized and operating. Finally, she was part-time administrative assistant in the Physics Department at Georgia Tech. Ms. Melton and her husband returned to Georgia and settled in Hartwell in 2000, where they became members of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. After her retirement, Ms. Melton secured the incorporation and non-profit status of the Hart Community Food Ministry, and coordinated the original organization and continuing work of that food co-op, under the auspices of St. Andrew’s church. The co-op became an independent organization and functions to assist Hart County residents with food needs. Ms. Melton was on the Board of Directors at her death. Ms. Melton is survived by her husband of forty-seven years, Martin; her children and granddaughter in Atlanta, Rachel and Eric Ponder and Catherine. She was preceded in death by her brother, Vincent Pierotti, and his wife, Sandra Pierotti, both of Canton, Georgia. There will be visitation with the family at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, July 17. A memorial service with interment in the columbarium of the church will be at St. Andrew’s at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 18, followed by a reception at the church. Memorials may be made to the Outreach Fund of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 579 Fairview Avenue, Hartwell, Georgia. All such gifts will be used to benefit the domestic violence program and the food co-op, both in Hart County.
