Mr. Julius Richard “Jay” Earle, Jr., age 78 of 373 Woodhurst Drive in Hartwell passed away on Tuesday, July 21st, 2015.
Mr. Earle was born August 14, 1936 in Washington, D.C. He is best known for his work as the Director of Mergers and Acquisitions for the FSLIC during the savings and loan crisis of the 1980’s and 90’s. He and his team saved the American taxpayers billions of dollars by preventing savings and loan failures across the country. Prior to his service with the federal government, Mr. Earle was an officer for several banks including Old Dominion Bank and D.C. National Bank. He retired from the federal government after serving in the Senior Executive Service with the FDIC.
Mr. Earle was a graduate of George Washington University, and a veteran of the US Navy. During his high school years, he played the saxophone in a Washington, D.C. band with Warren Beatty. In addition to his career accomplishments, Mr. Earle is also known for having what is believed to be the tallest rope swing in the Washington, D.C. area. The 40-foot rope swing hanging off a 100-year-old elm tree at his home in Arlington, Virginia was enjoyed by hundreds of children throughout the 1970’s and 80’s.
A long time resident of the Washington, D.C. area, Mr. Earle retired to Hartwell, Georgia in 1996. Mr. Earle was a member of Golden K (Past President), American Legion, Hartwell Tail Spinners, Hartwell Property Owners Association (Past President), Senior Follies of Anderson, S.C., and the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Hartwell, where he sang in the Sacred Heart Choir, and frequently played his saxophone.
He is survived by; his wife, Judy Rogers Earle, son, James Richard Earle (Sherri) of San Diego, daughters, Lisa Earle McLeod (Robert) of Atlanta, Leslie Earle Freymann (Gordon) of Atlanta, step-daughter Holly Makowski (Michael), brother Luman Earle, and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius R. Earle, Sr., and Elizabeth Ruth Carpenter Earle, and his first wife, Frances Bell Earle and his son, John Robert Earle.
A service of celebration will be held on Friday, August 14, 2015 at 7 p.m. followed by a funeral mass on Saturday, August 15 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1009 Benson St., Hartwell GA. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Rainey Hospice House, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621, Golden K Ramp Fund (through Hart County Golden Kiwanis), Hart County Animal Shelter or Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.
