Thomas Bender
Thomas (Tom) R. Bender, age 68 of 355 Cade Street, Hartwell GA died at his home on Monday, December 26, 2016 after a long battle with liver disease. Born September 15, 1948 in Richmond California, he was the son of Col. Charles Robert and Marjorie Willis Bender. Mr. Bender, a Viet Nam veteran, spent over 20 years with the US Army beginning in 1968 later retiring as a Major. He was employed by the Whitworth Detention Center for over 16 years as a Correctional Officer. He graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a B.A. in Speech and Theater. Tom was active for years in the Hart County Community Theater, which he loved. After his retirement in 2006, he enjoyed traveling to and living in distant places with his wife. He loved his dog Roxie, old movies, military history, and all things Scottish. Tom was dedicated to helping his wife and children accomplish their pursuits and pastimes. He is survived by his wife, Annice Leard Bender, children, Elizabeth Bender of Kodiak Alaska and Charles Bender of Cornelius NC, and his adored dog, Roxie. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Marjorie Jane Bender and Robert W. Bender. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 29, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Coile- Hall- Spagnoli Funeral Home. Rev. Dr. Hugh Kirby will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 12 until 1 prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hart County Animal Rescue, P.O.
