William McSwain Obituary

Mr. William “Bill” Ernest McSwain, age 94 of 147 Athens Street, Hartwell, Ga., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Hart Care Center surrounded by his loving family. Born June 21, 1922 in York, S.C., he was the son of the late Preston Avon Homer McSwain and Mary Amanda Quinn McSwain. He was an honors graduate of Clemson University, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and was president of Hartwell Mills for many years retiring in 1990. He was a World War II Army Air Force Veteran serving in the China, Burma and India Theater. Mr. McSwain was a member of First Baptist Church of Hartwell, and was a former deacon of the church for many years and taught Sunday school for 75 years. He was active in prison ministry, the Salvation Army and was a Gideon for 55 years. He was a member of the Hartwell Rotary Club and served on numerous boards throughout his career. He is survived by; son, Mike McSwain and his wife, Sue Shirley McSwain of Wolfeboro Falls, N.H., grandchildren, Michele Singleton and Michael McSwain, Jr., great-grandchildren, Alle Singleton, Corbin Singleton, Caitlin McSwain and Catherine McSwain, and his dear friend, Patricia Alford. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Allene McSwain, siblings, Rev. Philip Homer McSwain, Jr., John M. McSwain, Magaret Lorraine Smart, Ruthie Ann McSwain, Lucy Naomi McSwain, John Albert McSwain, J.B. McSwain, and Annie Mae Propst. Services celebrating the life of Bill McSwain will be held on Friday, June 16, 2017 at Three o’clock from the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Hartwell with Dr. Steve Albanese and Rev. Carter Tucker officiating. Burial services will follow at Nancy Hart Memorial Park. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church. The body is at the funeral home and the family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7-9. The family will be at their respective homes and have asked that memorials be made in the memory of Bill McSwain to the Hartwell Camp of Gideon's International, P.O. Box 59, Hartwell, Ga. 30643 Coile-Hall-Spagnoli Funeral Home. 333 E. Johnson Street in Hartwell will be serving the McSwain family.
