Hazel Kaakimaka Obituary

Hazel Maria "Didi" (Place) Ka'akimaka, 91, of Kaunakakai, Molokai, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2017 in Waipahu, Oahu. She was born September 16, 1925 in Kaunakakai, Moloka'i. Didi lived a life full of love and laughter with her family and friends. She met her husband, Ike, on Molokai, while he was in the Army. After getting married and moving to Oahu, they started their family. Didi worked many years in the accounting office of the Hilton Hawaiian Village. She loved traveling and going on cruises. After her retirement and her husband's death, she moved from Oahu back to her beloved Moloka'i. She was happy and active in the Ka'ahumanu Society, Alu Like, and the Hawaiian Civic Club. She looked forward to playing her ukelele every Friday at Hotel Molokai's Happy Hour with all the other kupuna. She particularly enjoyed being a part of recording the CD "Na Mele o Kupuna, Treasures of Molokai". She is truly loved and will be missed by all her family and friends. She leaves behind her son, Kevin (Kipi) Ka'akimaka; daughters, Melvina Leed (Mike), Nalani (Joey) O'Brien, Monette Kamelamela-Ka'akimaka, and Phyllis (Charles) Kuamo'o and Pili (Mel) Moisa; brothers Damien, Buster, Rhinehardt, and Milton Place; sisters Rhoda Chong-Kee, Toochie Kalipi and Karen Joao. Grandchildren; Jolene O'Brien, Keola Ka'akimaka, Ikaika O'Brien, Kalaniku Martinez, Kaniela Kamelamela, Janna O'Brien, Keli'i Kuamoo, Haku Kamelamela, Nohea Kamelamela, Kanani Ka'akimaka, Kauka Kuamoo, Ka'aikaula Naluai-Sempio, Kuikanoa Ka'akimaka, Ka'ila Paris. Numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Isaiah V. Ka'akimaka, Jr.; her parents, William and Dora Place; two grandchildren, Kamu Kamelamela & Lehua Ka'akimaka-Kupahu, and her siblings, William and George Place and Dorothy Cope. Memorial services will be held on her birthday, September 16, 2017 at Our Lady of Seven Sorrows at 10:30 am in Kaunakakai, Molokai. Luncheon to follow.
