Paul Leslie Hummel, 88, of Honolulu HI, passed away on March 13, 2017 with family at his side at Hale Nani Rehab and Nursing center. Paul was born June 2, 1928 in Cedar Rapids Iowa to Chris and Jessie (Rieger) Hummel, the third of five children. He lived in Lisbon Iowa with his family where they pulled together through the Depression years. He said that, although they did not have the luxuries of life, he felt he had a home rich with love. When Paul was age 11 his father died unexpectedly, which was a tragic loss to the family. In 1939 his family moved to a family farm south of Dixon IL where Paul, his mother, older brother and two younger brothers kept the farm going. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Dixon. He attended "country school" until his high school years and felt he received an excellent education there. He graduated from Dixon High School in 1946. In 1949 Paul joined the U.S. Air Force and was trained as a jet fighter pilot. He served active duty in the Korean conflict from 1951 to 1953 with the 522nd Fighter Squadron, 27th Fighter Wing. He was a recipient of numerous citations including the Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross. Paul met lovely hula dancer, Elsie Liko Ah Nee, in Honolulu. They were married on March 7, 1953 in Austin TX. In 1954 they moved back to Honolulu HI where their first daughter, Wanda, was born. Paul earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Hawaii in 1957. Daughters Robin and Kimberly came into the family in 1956 and 1957. In 1961 Paul earned his Master of Science degree from the University of Nebraska, and in 1973 his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Northwestern University in Evanston IL. In 1962 daughter, Kelly, was born. Paul felt he had dealt with enough destruction in the war and wanted to do something constructive with his life. He chose teaching as his career and taught Civil Engineering courses at the University of Nebraska and University of Hawaii, where he retired from a professorship in 1994. He continued to serve as a jet pilot with the Hawaii Air National Guard in the mid-1960's, and attained the rank of Major. Paul joined his wife and family in membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in many positions of leadership and service. He was a member of the Manoa Ward, Honolulu Oahu Stake. We, his wife, daughters, and grandchildren are grateful for the wonderful husband, father, grandfather we were blessed with! He always put his family first, working hard to provide for our needs and wants, but, also making time to provide us with many wonderful experiences, giving us his time in so many special ways. The memories we hold onto are a blessing in his absence now. Paul remained devoted to his mother and extended family, and visits back “home” to the Dixon homestead farm were always a highlight of his life. Paul was an example of selflessness and service, humility, taught us to be appreciative of the blessings we received each day, encouraged us to reach our full potential, was devoted to our mother to the end. He had a wonderful sense of humor, could often be heard whistling in our home, reflecting his happy spirit, which will be greatly missed amongst all of us! Paul loved family, God and country, and it can be said that he truly exemplified those of the “Greatest Generation.” Paul is survived by wife, Elsie Liko Hummel of Honolulu HI, daughters Wanda (David) McFall of Centerville UT, Robin Eberhardt of Dunedin FL, Kimberly Ryan of Honolulu HI, Kelly Hummel-Colla of Van Nuys CA, 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, brothers Wayne (Rita) Hummel of Dixon IL, Robert (Thelma) Hummel of Knoxville IL, sister-in-law Emagene (Charles, deceased) Hummel of Dixon IL, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by father Chris and mother Jessie, sister Ruth and brother Charles. Family held a private memorial for Paul and his ashes will be interred at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific -Punchbowl crater , Court 13, Honolulu HI, on June 2nd at 10:30am. The family wishes to extend their deep gratitude for the wonderful care our husband, father, grandfather received while at Kaiser Medical Center Moanalua, and Hale Nani Rehab and Nursing Center. “Until we meet again, Aloha Pumehana!”
