David Pico Obituary

One of Maui’s legendary contractors, David Pico, passed away on August 24, 2020. David was born on June 9, 1934 in Kaupakalua, Haiku to John and Rose Pico. At a young age, David began working on a chicken farm where he made memories that he later laughed about with his family. In 1955, David met the love of his life at the old Kahului Shopping Center, Harold’s Inn. After a couple of dates, he brought Myrtle home to meet his parents and introduced her as “the girl I’m going to marry”. They were married shortly after on May 26, 1956 at St. Joseph Church. They were blessed with 4 children in their 64 years of marriage. To support his family, David worked at Maui Pine while taking on side jobs with a shovel and bucket in hand. In 1959, he proudly purchased his first crane. David Pi-co Cesspool Digging was established shortly after in 1963. He was a hard-working and humble man who accepted challenges in order to provide the best life he could for his family. At the age of 76, David retired but continued to actively engage in the family business. In his later years, David enjoyed travelling, especially to the ninth island, Las Vegas. He had a "good time" playing in slot tournaments at the Golden Nugget. He had an endearing heart and strong appreciation for animals especially his “baby”, Hootch. But above all, he cherished every moment that was spent with his family. David is admired and will always be remembered for his kind smile, loving personal-ity, great sense of humor, and calm demeanor. Left to honor his legacy is his wife Myrtle Pico, his children-- Mavis (Ken) Goetsch, Eric (Donna) Pico, and Gary Pico. 8 grandchildren-- Adam and Jason Goestch (Mavis), Cheyenne and Chelsey Pico (Bryan), Kyle, Jenna, and Kaycie Pico (Eric), Trent Pico (Gary), and his 9 great-grandchildren-- Paxton Goestch (Adam), Leora & Maya Goestch (Jason), Kūloa, Iokewe, & Ha’ilani Lind (Cheyenne), Levi Kalama-Baker (Chelsey), Caiden & Cooper Vinson (Kaycie). He is met in heaven by his par-ents-- John and Rose Pico, sib-lings-- Gilbert Pico and Irene Ferreira, and son David “Bryan” Pico. A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph Church, 1294 Maka-wao Ave. on Saturday, October 3rd at 10 a.m., with interment to follow. Social distancing and a mask will be required.
