Joann left this world much the same as she came in, at peace with God and surrounded by her loving family. The world received a gift when she was born Easter Sunday, April 19, 1928, to Carl and Frieda Nelson in Lewiston. She was the youngest of seven children, five brothers and one sister, all of whom went on ahead of her. As a young woman she worked for the Lewiston Tribune and then for many years until her retirement, she was with Montgomery Wards.
After World War II she met and married a returning U.S. Navy veteran, Sherman E. (Bud) Yochum. Together they had six children and shared the same Lewiston home for 60 years. Bud and their baby Dawn preceded her in death. Joann is survived by daughters, Lu and husband Bob Williams of Denver, Rosalyn and husband Keno Cornell of Lewiston and Roxanne and husband Ron Meredith of Southwick; her sons, Chris and his wife Terri Yochum and Mark and his wife Barbara Yochum live in Lewiston as well. As Grandma Jo and as Gramma Cookie, she leaves behind eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. As Aunt Jo, she was loved by her many nieces and nephews.
Her greatest gift was the unconditional love she spread amongst her family and friends. She was never judgmental and always offered more than she received, putting her family ahead of her needs for a lifetime. Joann was an excellent cook and baker who taught her daughters well. She leaves us as a wealthy woman because, as she put it, "Wealth is not dollars and cents, it is the love you give and receive from your family." Ladies like this do not come along often. We are fortunate to have had the opportunity to say, "She was our mother, our grandmother, our aunt or our friend." She was our angel. Mom took care of her earthly family for a lifetime; now she can join her heavenly family for an eternity.
A private memorial service will be planned and announced. The family requests, as would be her wish, that in lieu of flowers or gifts contributions be made to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center Family Hospice.
