Rev. Dr. John Boyle Obituary

John Howard Boyle, age 87, Founding Director of The Lorene Replogle Counseling Center of Fourth Presbyterian Church, Chicago. Loving husband of Kathye Kerchner-Boyle, he is also survived by son John David Boyle and daughter Kathy Boyle-Gast (David) of Athens, GA, and granddaughter Hunter Gast (Nashville, TN). John was born in Jersey City, NJ and lived in Brooklyn during his childhood, excelling in his academics from an early age. Prior to assuming his position at Fourth, he was Director of Counseling and Clinical Pastoral Education at the Texas Medical Center, Houston, Texas. Before that, John served on faculty at both the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (where he received his masters and doctorate in theology) and the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He graduated from Temple University with an A.B. degree, and also holds a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Central Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City, KS. John served in World War II as 1st Sergeant in the 42nd Rainbow Division of the U.S. Army in France and Germany. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge. His unit was one of the first to liberate the Nazi Concentration Camp at Dachau, Germany, in April, 1945. Through such experiences, his prior decision to enter the ministry was affirmed with the conviction to counter the moral injustices he witnessed. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at Fourth Presbyterian Church, Michigan Avenue and Delaware. Contributions to honor John’s memory may be made to the Lorene Replogle Counseling Center. Arrangements by CENTRAL CHAPEL, Lane-Moynihan Directors, Downtown Chicago.
