Theodore Thompson Obituary

Theodore James Thompson (Ted), age 82, of Northbrook, IL, passed away in the early morning hours on Friday May 12, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. Born October 3, 1934, in Chicago, IL he was the son of the late Theodore (Spats) Thompson and Quenta (Dinnocenzo) Thompson. After graduating from Mount Carmel High School, Ted attended University of Illinois, Champaign and Roosevelt University in Chicago. Ted was inducted into the Army where he served from January, 1955 until 1957, with reserve duty until 1963. Ted began his accounting career with Katz Wagner which joined with Alexander Grant & Co in 1968. He became a partner in the early 1970’s and grew with the company, now Grant Thornton, a major international CPA firm. After serving some of their most important clients in both Chicago and Los Angeles, he became the firm’s CFO and held that post until his retirement in 1996. Ted built a reputation for innovation and expertise as he led client assignments in diversified industries including; distilled spirits, sports & entertainment, hotel operations and commercial construction. When a major casino client decided to provide closed circuit TV feeds of a major heavy-weight boxing event for the first time, with 3 days’ notice, Ted successfully designed and implemented “gate proceeds” controls from arenas nationwide. Ted maintained close friendships with many of his partners throughout his life. When Ted wasn’t busy with job responsibilities he enjoyed traveling and fulfilled his goal to reach the 4 corners of the world. Travel was not limited to big trips; among his favorites were those he spent fishing with the people he loved most. His passion for woodworking tapped into his creative side and the results will be cherished by his family for generations. In Ted’s retirement years, he served on the board and as Treasurer of the Northbrook Symphony Orchestra, where he was an original member. The love of his extended family fueled his interest in genealogy in later years and he enjoyed spending time working on both his family tree and that of his wife Mary’s. Ted’s love for the Chicago Cub’s began at the age of 11 when his uncle took him to his first major league baseball game, the Cub’s vs the Detroit Tigers in 1945. For 71 years, he loyally cheered on his Cubbies and was rewarded with a World Series Championship in 2016! Ted is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary (Knight) Thompson; along with three children; Therese Thompson (Richard Smith) and Margaret Thompson (John Liggett) of Chicago, IL, and Ted J Thompson (Raye Thompson) of Rochester Hills, MI; 2 grandchildren, Nicholas Smith and Theo Thompson, brother to the late William "Bill" Thompson, and many loving nieces, nephews and relatives. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held for Ted at The Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Techny Towers Conference and Retreat Center, 2001 Waukegan Rd., Techny (Northbrook), Illinois at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 22, with a reception to follow immediately after.
