Dean Smith, 81, August 20, 2019, longtime resident of the Southwest side of Chicago; loving father of Richard Smith (Therese); devoted grandfather of Nicholas Smith; beloved son of the late Philip and Naja Stefanovic;. Dean emigrated to the United States as Miodrag Stefanovic, in 1969, and will be remembered for stories of his many and varied life experiences in several countries. These included railroad signaler (Yugoslavia), high school teacher (Yugoslavia), librarian (Chicago), Western Electric assembly line worker (Chicago), British Military dog trainer (West Germany), driving instructor for Yugoslav emigres (West Germany), Channel 26 Serbian language news commentator (Chicago), Cook County political organizer and Sheriff (Chicago), and undisclosed intelligence work for the FBI and the CIA (Chicago, New York, Washington DC, West Germany, Yugoslavia). He became an avid gardener later in his life, and was a fixture in his Clearing neighborhood for his daily walks.
