Versell Samuel West Motley was born in Beckley West Virginia on May 6, 1947 to the union of Louis Motley, Sr. and Courtney Motley.
He was an active child growing up, and was affectionately called “Sugar” and later referred to as “Tuggar” by his family. His family left the picturesque hills of West Virginia and moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1956 when Tuggar was 9 years old. He attended Chicago public schools and Blessed Sacrament school and church.

He would also use his talent in home construction and repair. Versell would later move to California for several years and then return to Chicago. Versell would pull closer to his family after the passing of his mother.
He leaves to treasure precious memories sons Isaiah, Erick, Derrick, Versell, Jr.; daughters, Toni and Tracey; sister, Nancy Williams; brothers, Louis Motley (Esther), Vernon Spann; cherished companion Kim Clark-Hassig; and, treasured nieces and nephews.
