Mike Scherer Obituary

Dee Michael “Mike” Scherer, 73 of Bath, England and a former resident of Marion and Herrin passed away at 1:58 p.m., Monday, February 3, 2020 in Kindred Hospital St. Louis South with his family by his side. Mike was born November 18, 1946 in Springfield, Ohio to August Emanuel and Thelma J. (Garlough) Scherer. He married Julie Heywood on May 23, 2007 in Bath, England. Mike was retired having been in construction most of his life. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served his country honorably during the Vietnam War. He was a 1964 graduate of Herrin High School. Mike enjoyed spending time outdoors. One his favorites places he liked to visit was Giant City Park. He liked to eat at the lodge and take a hike on the trails. He was an avid sports fan. While in high school, he played basketball and football. He enjoyed playing backgammon with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He also loved to travel and spend time with his family. Mike is survived by his wife, Julie Scherer of Bath, England; two children, Jason (Amy) Scherer of Herculaneum, MO and Stephanie (Aaron) Gose of Marion; four grandchildren, Nathan and David Gose of Marion, Ethan Rozner and Jacob Rozner of Herculaneum, MO. He is also survived by his step-mother, Mary Scherer of Herrin. He was preceded in death by his parents, August “Dee” and Thelma Scherer; his grandparents; an aunt, several uncles and other relatives. Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 29, 2020 at the Whiteash Free Will Baptist Church with Pastor Andy Lee officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by the Illinois National Guard Military Honors Team. Visitation will be Saturday, February 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church.
