Calvin G. Porter, age 73, of Oak Lawn, IL passed away on April 26, 2012. Survivors are his wife Lynn and include daughter Jan (Gerald) Garwood of LaPorte, IN and son John Porter of Hammond, IN. Grandchildren are Dawn Davis, Daniel Davis and Emily Garwood of LaPorte, IN. He is a great-grandfather of two. Brothers and sisters are Joanne Lagestee of Lansing, IL, Frank (Linda) Porter of Lakeland, FL, George (Charlotte) Porter of Lansing, IL, Helen (Carl) Bussema of Lansing, IL and Wilma (Greg) Lange of TX. He was preceded in death by his father Frank Porter, mother Jeanette Porter and brothers Paul and David and sister Ruth. Mr. Porter had a technical career which during the 1960’s included assisting in the design of a facsimile (fax) machine for the world’s largest printing company and the research and development of amino resins for a major chemical company. During the 1970’s and 1980’s he was a loss prevention engineer for the oil and petrochemical industry. This was accomplished through employment with the Oil Insurance Association and included worldwide inspections of major oil refineries and petrochemical facilities. He specialized in high and very high hazard plants. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hammond, IN and also a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Visitation will be Monday, April 30, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. until time of the Funeral Service 12:00 Noon at Colonial Chapel, 15525 S. 73rd Ave. (155th/Wheeler Dr. & Harlem) Orland Park, IL. Interment will be at Orland Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Porter was very hesitant to assist in the writing of his obituary because he said that “God Almighty should be given all the credit for any skills that he acquired during his lifetime.” All visitors are invited to a fellowship luncheon after the burial.
