Elizabeth "Betty" Bakkers

Elizabeth Betty Herta (Steinke) Bakkers passed away on Friday, January 19, 2007 at her home in Murphysboro, IL. She was born on September 21, 1916 in Germany. She came to the United States with her family when she was seven years old. She lived most of her life on the north side of Chicago until she met Elves Bakkers and married him on June 17, 1948. She then moved to the south side of Chicago. Elves was the owner and operator of Bakkers Pharmacy located on 115th Street in Roseland for many years. Services will be Monday, January 22, 2007 at Colonial Chapel, 15525 South 73rd Avenue, Orland Park, IL. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon. A chapel service will begin at noon. Burial will be immediately following the service at Mount Hope Cemetery, S.W. Corner 115th St. and Fairfield Ave., Chicago, IL. Betty lived in Chicago, Riverdale, Orland Park, and at Brementown Manor in Tinley Park until 2000, when she relocated to Murphysboro, IL to live near her daughter and daughter’s family. She resided at Big Muddy River Assisted Living. Betty and Elves had two children, Phoebe Steinmetz who lives in Murphysboro, IL and Vernon Bakkers who lives in Blue Island, IL. During Betty’s life she was very active in many organizations and clubs. While Elves was the president of the Roseland Lions Club, Betty was the president of the Lady Lions. She was also president of the West Pullman’s Women’s Club for many years and the Kenrose Women’s Club. She was also a member of the Roseland Community Hospital Auxiliary. Betty loved doing club work and was well known for her endeavors. She was also a member of the Tinley Park Community Church for most of her adult life. In September 2006, Betty celebrated her 90th birthday with a special birthday party attended by family. She was given a private flute concert, which was the instrument played by her loving husband, Elves. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, two brothers and one grandson, Kelly Steinmetz. Her beloved husband, Elves, passed away in May of 1983. She is survived by one daughter, Phoebe Steinmetz (husband Bill); one son, Vernon Bakkers; two granddaughters, Erin Tarrants (husband Adam), and Amy Tarrants (husband Jerod); one great granddaughter, Haleigh Tarrants; one sister, Mary Frederick; niece, Debbie Binder; nephew, Roger Peterson and wife, Ann Clark-Peterson, and their daughter, Diane Peterson; nephews Rick and Raymond Peterson. Memorials may be made to the Tinley Park Community Church, 7939 W. 167th St., Tinley Park, IL 60477 or Big Muddy Assisted Living, 5 N. Shawnee Dr., Murphysboro, IL 62966.
