Victoria A. Butterfield Obituary

Victoria (Vicki) A. Butterfield, nee Hougan, age 73, beloved wife of 51 years to Michael (Mike) W. Butterfield. Loving mother of Matthew (Nancy), Jeremy, Jonathan (Leanna), David (Kaitlin) and Meghan (Jason) Sleezer. Cherished grandmother to 17 adoring grandchildren: Hallie 20, Madison 19, Claire 18, Sam 17, Cole 16, Hudson 15, Silas 14, Savannah 14, Ryder 14, Mikos 13, Jackson 13, Julian 8, Sadie 8, Olivia 4, Aiden 3, Bob 2, and one more baby Butterfield on the way. Dear aunt to many nieces and nephews. She was a cherished friend and sibling to Karen Madson (Jim Bina), Minneapolis, MN, Kristi (Richard) Paterson, Cedar Rapids, IA, and Paul (Beth) Hougan, Faribault, MN.

Vicki was born to Howard and Ruby (Holzhueter) Hougan in Madison, WI. These dedicated parents raised Vicki and her siblings within a Christ-centered home. Ruby was a treasured, life-time Lutheran school teacher. Howard was a selfless, heroic WWII pilot, small business owner and laborer dedicated to serving his Lord, his family and his country through his vocation. Vicki elected to attend Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN in 1965 where she met and began dating Mike. They married in 1968 and were blessed with five children. By grace alone, the Spirit has granted lives of service to her children as similarly dedicated Christians focused on serving God in faith and their neighbors in love. Attendance within Lutheran schools has been a hallmark of Butterfield children and grandchildren.

Vicki was diagnosed with cancer in 2016, the very same day on which her only daughter’s first child was born. While the Spirit living within her was vibrant until the end, cancer and its treatments overwhelmed her weakening body rapidly in her final weeks. But cancer will never define Vicki, nor will any other simplistic labels. She was a professional in the insurance field, but gifted with enough poise and energy to raise five children. She traveled the world with her sisters, but equally loved snuggling grandbabies in a recliner at home. She could prepare meals like Julia Child and sew wardrobes effortlessly from Vogue patterns, but her humility belied her expertise. Common descriptions of her offered by friends and family describe her as beautiful, inspirational, witty, sweet, treasured, and a powerful Christian witness.
