Obituary for Sam Johns

Another member of the Greatest Generation has passed away. Sam Johns departed this life on February 14, 2011. He was born in Monessen, PA, January 26, 1919 to Mike and Jamily Johns. Although his family moved to Indianapolis in the late 1930s, Sam remained a staunch Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

Sam served in the U.S. Army, landing in Normandy a few days after D-Day. When he returned, he attended Butler University. He later received his real estate broker's license, specializing in commercial real estate.

His east side restaurant, Sam's Pizza, was but one example of his strong entrepreneurial spirit. For 23 years, he was known as "Sam, the Pizza Man." Sam's Pizza was one of the first carry-out pizza shops with an open kitchen and hand-tossed pizza. He retired from the pizza business in 1980, focusing on commercial real estate.

Sam was a member of St. George Orthodox Christian Church, serving on its Board of Trustees and various committees. He was a 32° Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner for over 50 years.

Sam was most proud of his family. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Norma Corey Johns, his daughters Janis (Tony) Saliba and Donna (Brian) Dickinson, his six grandchildren, Natalie, Nicholas and Sam Saliba, and Claire, Grace and Brian Samuel Dickinson. His sister, Gloria Kafoure also survives, as well as his many nieces and nephews. His sisters, Elizabeth Corey, Selma Mesalam, Norma Mesalam, and his brother, Norman Johns, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 pm at Harry Moore mortuary in Castleton, with a Trisagion Service at 7:30 pm. Visitation will resume at 10:30 am Friday at St. George, 4020 N.
