William D. Haworth Obituary

Mr. William D. Haworth, age 92, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at the River Terrace Health Campus in Madison. Born December 4, 1923 in Charleston, Illinois, he was the son of William and Mary Elizabeth (Taylor) Haworth. He was a 1941 graduate of Charleston High School, and attended Eastern Illinois State University. He entered the United States Army on March 20, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois, and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. He volunteered for parachute troops in the 82nd Airborne Division, and served in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded during the Holland engagement and received the Purple Heart medal. He returned to the United States and was honorably discharged on September 23, 1945 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, Separation Center. He moved to Madison in 1951 and worked for the Williamson Company for two years before joining the Jefferson Proving Ground as a gunner and proof director. He retired on February 25, 1983. He then worked at JPG as a sub-contractor for several years. Mr. Haworth was united in marriage to the former Phyllis June Thornton on June 18, 1953 in Madison. Along with their son, they enjoyed many trips to various amusement parks, federal parks, and ball games. They also enjoyed fishing trips. Mr Haworth became a member of the Miss Madison Racing Team and the three of them made numerous trips around the country with the team. He served as crew chief for one year. He will be sadly missed by one son, Kevin L. Haworth of Madison; one aunt, Charlotte Taylor of Decatur, Illinois; and one uncle, Tony Dale Schellabarger of Charleston, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on May 6, 2001; one sister, Hazel Bracken on January 7, 2006; and six aunts and uncles. The Reverend Richard Jankowsky will conduct funeral services at 10:00 AM Friday, August 12, 2016 in the Chapel of the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery, with interment to follow. The Honor Guard of Jefferson Post #9, American Legion, will conduct military honors at the cemetery. Friends and family may call at the Lytle Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday, August 11, 2016, and from 9:30 to 10:00 AM Friday at the cemetery chapel. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Ryker's Ridge Baptist Church. Contributions may be made at any of the Lytle Funeral Homes & Cremation Service locations.
