Bernard F. Elsenbast, the son of Frank and Agnes (McDonald) Elsenbast was born May 23, 1932, in Graettinger, Iowa. He died Friday, September 1, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society in Estherville, Iowa, at the age of 85.

He received his education in the Graettinger schools. Bernard served as a Sergeant in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.

On June 29, 1957, he was united in marriage to Jean Graettinger. Bernard and Jean lived on the Elsenbast farm west of Graettinger for their entire marriage. Bernard loved to farm and milk cows. He milked Holstein dairy cattle for 40 years and his children showed cattle at the Palo Alto County fair for many years.

Bernard was an avid sportsman. Hunting with his family and friends was one of his favorite things to do. As a member of the Hillcrest Golf Club, he enjoyed golf outings and especially the Elsenbast annual family golf tournament. Bernard also loved playing cards. He was famous for his aggressive bidding in family 500 card tournaments. Bernard enjoyed going to farm auctions and was proud of his antique collection.

He was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and was a member of the Board of Directors for many years. Bernard was active in the Knights of Columbus, Graettinger State Bank Board, Graettinger Coop Board, Graettinger Creamery Board, and a founding member of the Hillcrest Board of Directors.

Left to cherish Bernard's memory are his wife, Jean of Graettinger; his children, Catherine (Bruce) Bratrude of Wenatchee, WA, Michael (Susan) Elsenbast of Littleton, CO, David (Catherine) Elsenbast of Ames, IA, Marilyn (Leni) Woodley of Bloomington, MN, Frank (Lisa) Elsenbast of Minneapolis, MN; twelve grandchildren, Brandi Bratrude, Courtney (Jordi) Viladas, Patrick Elsenbast, Thomas Elsenbast, Emily (Antonio) Parés, Christopher Elsenbast, John Elsenbast, Jennifer Woodley, Justin Woodley, Sophie Elsenbast, Claudia Elsenbast and Quinn Elsenbast; one great-grandchild, Kaiden Packard; and sister, Agnes Elsenbast of Estherville.

He has been preceded in death by his parents; and brother, John.
