Jeannette Bishop

Jeannette I. Bishop passed away on February 21, 2017, among family and friends who loved her greatly. Jeannette Irene Domann was born on June 3, 1924 to Louis and Elizabeth (Lynn) Domann as the seventh of eight children. They lived in a farming community known as Mooney Creek, located in northeast Jefferson County, Kansas. Jeannette lived on the farm through hard times such as the dust bowl, great depression, and WWII, but came through life with an upbeat personality. She attended local schools, riding a horse to elementary school, and was a cheerleader, band member and basketball player at Winchester High School. Jeannette married Wilbur Curtis (Kirt) Bishop on June 1, 1942. They lived on the Bishop Farm homestead in Mooney Creek and raised four children; Gary (Sonita) Bishop of Albuquerque, NM; Ron (Diana) Bishop of the Bishop farm in Mooney Creek; Diane (James) Kelly of Overland Park, KS; and Denise Mercer of Nashville, TN. Her husband, Kirt, died in 1994. Jeannette continued to live on the farm until she was 85, when she moved to Lansing, KS for several years, and more recently lived in Overland Park, KS. Jeannette is survived by her four children; grandchildren, Dana (Juan) Aragon of NM, Erin (Jacob) Swayze of TN, Jeff (Tracy) Bishop of China, Kelly Thomas of Overland Park, Russell Bishop of Lansing, Kyle (Katie) Kramer of Overland Park, and Daniel (Kelly) Bishop of Overland Park; great-grandchildren, Justin Aragon of NM, Jordan Aragon of Texas, Anderson Swayze of TN, Greyson and Beckett Thomas of Overland Park, and Jackson Bishop of Overland Park. Jeannette’s only remaining sibling, Rita Jacobs, lives in Nebraska. Jeannette’s husband Kirt; grandson, Will Bishop; brothers, Paul, Claude and Don; and sisters, Rachel, Agatha and Lorraine preceded her in death. Jeannette led an interesting and varied life. She was a dynamic farm wife and mother and was driven to make life better for everyone. She held a number of jobs including sewing in a factory during WWII, being a secretary at a feed store, working as a nurse’s aide at Winchester Hospital, working on the line at the Hallmark factory in Lansing, selling World Book Encyclopedias and books, many years as a seamstress at the Horton Garment Factory in Atchison, and as a paraprofessional educator with special needs children at the elementary school in Oskaloosa, KS. Jeannette belonged to various groups during her life including the Curlew Social Club, Corpus Christi Altar Society, quilting groups, Sweet Adeline’s Chorus, and was a founding member of a Red Hat Society. She served as a leader or support for her children’s 4-H club and her husband’s Farm Bureau activities. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, February 25, 2017 at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in the Mooney Creek Community, Winchester, KS with Fr. Lazar Carasala, Celebrant. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A parish rosary will be 6:00 pm, Friday, February 24, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison, KS with visitation to follow until 8:00 PM.
