Phyllis Jean Brock Obituary

Phyllis Jean Brock - December 15, 1933 to August 8, 2017 Phyllis, daughter of William and Reva DeLong, started her life in Topeka, Kansas ten days before Christmas in 1933. Many of her early childhood memories were shared with her brother William. During her school years she developed a love of arts and crafts and found the joy of creating for others. Early in her working career she decorated windows at W.T. Grant''s. After high school graduation in 1952 Phyllis moved from Topeka to her next home at the Watkins Scholarship Hall at the University of Kansas. The seeds for her joy of cooking were planted at Watkins when she prepared meals for her fellow classmates. At KU she studied Occupational Therapy and found the love of her life, James G. Brock. She married Jim in KU''s Danforth Chapel on April 3, 1955. Phyllis and Jim moved to Kansas City in 1956, where Jim began his accounting career and Phyllis became the mother of three, Cindy, Randy and Carolyn. While raising her children Phyllis found time to complete her Occupational Therapy studies and in 1968 joined Menorah Med Center for the start of her OT career. Phyllis and Jim traveled throughout the United States and parts of Europe. Hounds Ear Golf Club became one of their favorite destinations where their days were filled with great meals and many rounds of golf. She continued with her joy of arts and crafts she started as a child in Topeka. She loved to share with her grandchildren and the kids next door. During the holidays, she made cookies and cheese logs to share with friends and neighbors. Were you to ask her friends what Phyllis loved best, they would say the friendship of others, great food and wine, and entertaining. She studied to become a Master Chef at the K-State Extension campus in Johnson County and taught cooking classes. Phyllis shared her knowledge and love of fine wine with friends at Kansas City area wine tasting functions at Cellarmasters and The Friends of Wine. After their retirement Phyllis and Jim loved to follow daughter Carolyn and her cycling friends as they rode bikes throughout the Midwest. Often Phyllis would man the food stations and made certain that all participants were well fed. The family would like to thank Angie, Nikki and the private duty nurses of Interim Healthcare who looked after Phyllis the last few months.
