Peggy Weller Baker Obituary

Peggy JoAnn Cooley was born June 5, 1931, the daughter of Harold Sr. and Martha (Beck) Cooley. She grew up in the Kipp, Kansas area and graduated from high school in 1949. She passed away on Saturday, October 19 at the age of 82. Peggy attended Kansas Wesleyan and Emporia State Teacher’s College. At the age 20, she began teaching at Garfield Country School. She then taught at Chapel Hill Country School south of Gypsum. Peggy married her high school sweetheart, Mike Weller in 1951. They had two sons, Doug and Chris. She taught at Solomon Grade school during the early 1960’s. Mike passed away in 1968 after which time Peggy attended Marymount College to further her teaching education. She taught at Grace E. Stewart elementary School in Salina for 22 ½ years, mostly in 5th grade. Peggy married Darrell Baker in 1970. At this time they built their home in Solomon, Kansas and raised their three children, Doug, Chris and Rita. Darrell and Peggy retired in 1992 and have enjoyed traveling and being active with a variety of community activities. Peggy was a member of the Solomon Yoked Parish, the Presbyterian Women’s Group, Solomon Valley Tribune, Retired Teacher’s Association, various bowling leagues a card clubs. Survivors include Darrell Baker of the home. Children: Doug Weller (Marva) of Salina, Chris Weller (Marilyn) of Tonganoxie, Kansas, Rita Macy (Robert) of Abilene. Grandchildren: Shayna Barbee (Robert), Michael Weller (Joycelyn), Ashley Gepner (Mark), Madison Weller, Christy Oxley (Joseph), Joseph Macy (Kaysha) and Mark Macy; Great Grandchildren: Makenna Barbee, Nathan, Drew and Ryan Weller, Anna and Nolan Gepner, and Mason (Weller) McNeil. Peggy’s siblings include: Betty Rudasill (Charles) of Richmond, Virginia, Harold Cooley Jr. (Judy), Robert Cooley (Sally), Margie Johnson (Don) all of Salina. Karen Bickel (Gary) of Gypsum. Many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Tuesday evening, October 22 from 6-8 P.M. at the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home in Solomon. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 A.M. Wednesday, October 23 at the Presbyterian Church in Solomon. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Salina. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Solomon Presbyterian Church of the Kaye Pogue Hospice Center in Salina. Memorials may be sent in care to the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, 208 West 4th St., Solomon, Kansas 67480.
