Dixie Hoogendoorn
Dixie Fae Hoogendoorn, 82, Spring Hill, Kansas, formerly of Wamego, Kansas, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2020. Dixie was born in St. George, Kansas on October 20, 1937, to Paul Dallas and Fae M. (Anderson) Taggart. At age seven, she became ill and was left paralyzed. Dixie did not let her illness stop her. She graduated from St. George High School and went on to Emporia State University to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education Degree. Dixie taught English at Wellsville High School, Wellsville, Kansas early in her career. She married Raymond J. Hoogendoorn on June 1, 1963 in Olpe, Kansas and became a Marine Officer's wife.She enjoyed many years of working in the local schools in various roles. Dixie and Raymond owned and operated a computer store in Wamego, Kansas where they played a major role in putting their beloved town of forty years on the worldwide web. Four years ago, upon Ray's passing, Dixie moved to Spring Hill to be with family. Dixie was very creative and loved to write, do oil painting and sew. She beat the odds of her early childhood illness learning to drive a car, getting a college education and raising her family. Dixie will be truly missed by family and friends. Dixie is survived by her daughter Tami (David) Nichols, Spring Hill, Kansas; son Jon Paul (Tracey), Great Falls, Virginia; six grandchildren; Andy Shields (Meghan), Zach Shields, Emily Shields, Allie Paul, Campbell Paul, BrodyPaul; and brother Phil Taggart (Barb), Wamego, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Raymond and siblings: Jerry, Sandy and Marty. A Memorial Service celebrating Dixie’s life will be held at 6:30 pm, Monday, February 24, 2020, at Campanella- Evans Mortuary in Wamego. The family will greet friends the hour prior to the service and a dinner reception will follow the service. Inurnment will be held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, at the Wamego City Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the “Dragon Master Foundation” to benefit Jace Ward’s battle with cancer, and those may be sent in care of the mortuary.
