Chelsa Mae (McHugh) Wahl passed away November 7, 2012 at the Redbud Village in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 87. She was born February 3, 1925 in Midian, KS to William and Ella (Atkins) McHugh. Ella died while giving birth to Chelsa. Chelsa’s aunt and uncle, Odis and Adelle McHugh, who had no children of their own, adopted her.
Chelsa attended school in Toronto, KS and graduated with the class of 1942. She went on to The American Business College in Wichita, KS where she graduated with a degree in business in 1944 and then went to work for a trust company in Wichita. On June 9, 1945 Chelsa was united in marriage to Albert Wahl. They were blessed with a son named David.
The family moved from Toronto to Plainville in 1950, where Chelsa was the bookkeeper for R.M. Wood Tractor Service and later a secretary for the principal and superintendent at the Plainville schools.
In 1963 Chelsa and Albert bought and opened the Wahl Rexall Drug Store. Chelsa assisted her husband with the business. She enjoyed working the soda fountain and gift shop side. They sold the drug store and retired in 1984. Once retired they enjoyed traveling, and Chelsa helped her husband with his wood working projects.
Chelsa enjoyed volunteering for her church and many other organizations. She was den mother for Den (11) Cub Scouts, the Priscilla Art Club, Hospital Auxiliary and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #228 of Hays where she received her 50 year pin. She was a faithful member of the Plainville United Methodist Church, secretary for the United Methodist Woman’s Club, and was a lay leader.
After the death of her husband Albert, Chelsa started assisting the teacher at the Sacred Heart Grade School in August of 2000 and continued through May 2012. She made many friends with the children. Chelsa once stated that when her husband passed away her life looked quite bleak, but through her church and many friends she found another direction in her life and a greater faith. The staff at the school claimed that she helped the children so much, but she believed that the children helped her more then she helped them.
In the last few years Chelsa and her son David had the pleasure of spending a lot of time together, going places, talking about all their memories through life, doing plenty of laughing and just enjoying themselves. She was a very loving mother.
Left to cherish her memory are her son David Wahl and wife Cynthia, of Kensington, KS; four grandchildren, Nicole and Conley Nichols and Ryan and Melissa Kugler; nine great-grandchildren, Brenton, Lacey, Isaac, Ellias, Stone, Ezekeil, and Asher Nichols and Kaleb and Kami Kugler; and one great-great-grandson, Rooney Nichols. Also left to cherish her memory are very close friends Mike and Melissa Reed and their children, who she considered her grandchildren, Joseph, Jayce, Judah, Jillian, and Jensen Reed.
Chelsa was proceeded in death by her natural parents, Ella and William McHugh; her adopted parents, Odis and Adell McHugh; and her husband Albert.
Chelsa’s faith in Jesus Christ was important. She loved and trusted in Him with all her heart and enjoyed spreading his word and praying with others.
