Delores Jane Odle was born in northwest Rooks County on April 4, 1922 to Fred M. and Lola E. (Muir) Baxter. At 6 months of age the family moved to a farm in southeast Phillips County where she spent the rest of her childhood years. Delores passed away Monday, September 24, 2012 at Harmony Home, a private care home in McPherson, at the age of 90.
Delores was a 1940 graduate of Stockton High School and then worked at the AAA Office (now known as Farm Service Agency) until her marriage on March 18, 1944 to Gale B. Odle. Soon after, they moved to the family farmstead on the Phillips/Rooks County line where they lived and raised three children until moving to Stockton in 1989. Gale and Delores farmed and raised cattle in Phillips and Rooks counties. Even after moving to Stockton, they continued to drive to the farm each day and maintained their farming operation until retirement in 2004.
Delores was a great storyteller. She loved to tell stories that her grandparents told her and about her life growing up. Her dad passed away in 1933 so she had many stories about her mother continuing to manage the farm while raising two children during the Depression.
Delores had a great work ethic. She loved being a homemaker. Cooking and reading recipe books were favorite hobbies. Breads and homemade pies were her specialties. Grandchildren Dave, Trenton and Taylor remember her made-from-scratch birthday cakes. She also volunteered as a 4-H leader and room parent.
Delores and Gale moved to McPherson in December 2005 to be closer to their children but continued to maintain their home and farm in Rooks/Phillips counties.
Gale passed away in May 2008. Also preceding Delores in death were her parents, her brother Robert (Bob) Baxter and infant brother, Kent.
Survivors include her children, Terry (Mary Lou) of Salina, Ted (Jean) of McPherson and Tammy Odle Goering (Greg) of McPherson; three grandchildren, Dave (Kim) Odle of Salina, Trenton Goering and Taylor Goering of McPherson; sisters-in-law, Grace Turnbull and Aloha Odle, Stockton and Nellie Barth, Topeka, along with many nieces and nephews.
God placed Delores in our path as we go through life, and as family and friends we are the keepers of the memories we shared with her.
