Leo Joseph Von Feldt passed away Sunday, April 10, 2016 at his home in Palco, Kansas at the age of 80. He was born on August 2, 1935 in Victoria, Kansas to the late Frank G. and Angela (Weigel) Von Feldt. He grew up and worked on the farm near Victoria and graduated from Victoria High School with the Class of 1953. He went on to receive an A.A. Degree from Hutchinson Junior College in Hutchinson, Kansas in 1955; a B.S. Degree from Fort Hays State College in Hays, Kansas in 1957; and a M.S. Degree from Fort Hays in 1969. He served in the United States Army from 1958-1960. On August 16, 1962 he was united in marriage to Dorothy M. Goetz in Victoria. Together, they had five children, Lisa, Dana, Sara, Jon, and Amy.
Before starting his postsecondary education, Leo worked several jobs including the Organ Café, Lamer Farm, Hotel, and Motel, construction work for Schmidtberger, and driving truck for Emergency Grain Co. During his college years he worked for Nussbaum’s Clothing Store in Hutchison, Slate Construction Co. out of Portland, Oregon, and Busboom & Rauh Construction Co. out of Salina, Kansas. Before joining the Army, he worked as an accountant for Kansas Power & Light Co. in Topeka, Kansas. After serving in the Army, he used his GI Bill to receive his teaching certificate. He then went to Kanorado, Kansas as a bookkeeper for Coffey-Reid Elevator and a teacher at Kanorado High School. From there he moved to Palco, Kansas where he taught at Palco High School, coordinated classes for Colby Community College, and taught business outreach classes for CCC at Palco, WaKeeney, Quinter, Hoxie, Hill City, Logan, Plainville, and Philipsburg.
Leo spent most of his life serving the community of Palco and the surrounding area. He was Vice-President of First National Bank, President of Midwest Community Bank, and owner of Palco Insurance Co. He was Chairman of the Church Council for St. Ann’s in Zurich, Board Member and President of USD 269 School Board, Police Chief for the City of Palco, Mayor and City Councilman for the City of Palco, and Chairman of the Palco Housing Authority. He was also a member and past treasurer of the Palco Lions Club.
Leo is survived by his wife Dorothy Von Feldt of their home in Palco; son Jon Von Feldt of Hinsdale, NH; daughters Lisa Von Feldt of Hays, Dana Schmid and husband Bernie of Colby, Sara Von Feldt of Hays, and Amy Melendez and husband Mike of Hays; brother Karlos Von Feldt and wife Susie of Topeka; sister Charlotte Sanders of Wichita; grandchildren Hope Wagoner, Christina Beringer, Robyn Reed, Laura Schmid, Brittany Von Feldt, Darius Von Feldt, Brandon Von Feldt, and Rick Maestas; and great-grandchildren Dakota Von Feldt, Jett Von Feldt, Blaine Wagoner, Lynk Reed, Myck Reed, Burke Beringer, and Elle Beringer.
He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Angela Von Feldt, brother Arthur Von Feldt, sisters Isabelle Standley, Winifreda Beckwith, Alma Sherlock, Mabel Hayes, and Mary Louise Dreiling, and infant brothers Ernest and Charles Von Feldt.
Leo was a hardworking and loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, and neighbor. He was a man of faith who lived every day caring about the needs of others in his family and his community. The world and our lives are better because he was here. He made a difference that will last for generations to come.
