Obituary for Richard L. Fetterolf

Richard L Fetterolf, Sr. passed away Friday, April 29, 2016 at Hays Medical Center in hays, Kansas at the age of 71. He was born August 23, 1944 in Stockton, Kansas to the late Joe M. and Carolyn (Lesperance) Fetterolf. He grew up and attended schools in Albuquerque, NM, and Stockton and Webster, KS. In 1961 he joined the United States Navy, retiring in 1981. On January 5, 1963 he was united in marriage to Janice M. Jacobs. Together they had one son, Richard Jr.

During his naval career, Richard attended school at the Great Lakes Naval Station and served as a First Class Gunners Mate. He served several tours in Vietnam and others, aboard many ships. He enjoyed playing Bingo and gambling, working crossword puzzles, woodworking in his shop, and fishing whenever he had the chance. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #9076 in Hays, KS.

Richard is survived by his wife Janice Fetterolf of their home in Hays; son Richard Fetterolf, Jr. of LaCrosse; brothers Lawrence Fetterolf of Bellflower, CA, and Bryce Fetterolf of Tecumseh, NE; four grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents; parents Joe and Carolyn Fetterolf; brothers Joe Fetterolf, Jr., Gary Fetterolf, and George Fetterolf; and sisters Cary Jo Fetterolf, and Barbara Jo Fetterolf.

Richard was a man of honor, courage, and commitment. He lived as an example of these core values in his daily life with friends, family, neighbors, and brothers. A life well lived in the service of his country and his fellow man, his memory will live on in our hearts forever.

Services will be held at 10:30am on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at Plumer-Overklease Funeral Home in Stockton. Burial will follow at the Stockton Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 2:00-8:00pm at the funeral home, with family receiving friends from 5:00-7:00pm.
