Bob worked for Kaw Pipeline as a mechanic and later as a supervisor from the early 1950’s until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Stockton where he served on the parish council, served on the Rooks County Fair Board for several years, and was a member of the Sunflower Polka Club. Bob’s passion was horses. He bought and sold horses along with training horses for most of his life. He was very active in the Rooks County Free Fair. Bob started out as the assistance official of the harness races in 1954. Riding his saddle horse, he led the trotters onto the track for 35 years, from 1954 until the last race in 1989 and in 1968; he became the Harness Race Superintendant. In 1987, he became the volunteer chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee getting the grounds ready for para-mutual races. Because of Bob’s dedication to the Rooks County Fair, the infield and the track were named “Miller Field” in his honor after 46 years of service. In 2001 Bob was inducted into the Kansas Fairs Association Hall of Fame.
