Obituary for JAMES E STEWART

James “Jim” Stewart, 86, of Russell, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland with his family by his side.

Jim was born in Russell on June 7, 1928, to the late Charles and Lucy Newton Stewart.

He was also preceded in death by two wives, Ruby Greenhill Stewart in 1985 and Margie Nickles Stewart in 2009.

Mr. Stewart retired from the C&O Railroad, where he worked as a machinist for 44 years. Jim was a member of Rush Lodge 715, F&AM, York Rite-Ashland Comandry and the El Hasa Shrine Hillbilly Unit and was past president of the Motor Corps. He was a potentate escort in El Hasa Shrine and a Kentucky colonel.

Jim loved to travel and was fortunate enough to have been in all 50 states and many countries. He enjoyed camping in a motor home with his friends and family. Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Sea Bees-CMA 2, where he served in the Korean War as a petty officer second class. He was well-known for his motorcycle abilities, and in 1953 competed in the Daytona 200-mile nationals, placing 27th while riding on a Norton motorcycle.

Left behind to cherish his memory are a loving and devoted wife, Freda Adams Stewart of Wurtland; daughters Sharon (Richard) Boehm and Jackie Slaughter; stepdaughters Debbie (Chester) Kibby, Pam (Roger) Belford and Kay Adams; a sister, Janice (Don) Tschaen; a brother, Ted Stewart; grandchildren Amanda (Brad) Campbell, Andrea (Todd) Casey and Shannon (Charles) Wilson; and four great-grandchildren, Natalie and Nolan Campbell and Blake and Baylee Wilson. He also leaves behind a host of extended family and friends, including the Kearns family, which made him part of the family when he lost his mother at the young age of 14.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
